Chaos Knights Houndpack Lance - first games

My first practice games have started, I did play a RTT prior to September pts and balance update for Chaos Knights, but didnt take any pictures, so, I will be starting from game4 in the journey to mastering the Chaos Knights Houndpack Lance detachment.

My initial list is 14 Wardogs.

6  Wardog Stalkers - Daemonbreath Spear and Claw
4 Brigands
2 Karnivores
2 Executioners

Havoks on everything that can take them and Stubbers on the Executioners.

2 Enhancements:  Final Howl on Brigand and Preyslayer’s Mantle on a Karnivore, 1 Executioner is also a character (Warlord).

This gets me 196 T9 Wounds, a balance of ranged damage and combat counter punch.

I will say, most of my games are on UKTC maps, so have a bias towards shooting.

Practice game 1 vs Drukhari

A fairly balanced list, 2 Scourge units, Ravager with lances, 2 Raiders, Venom, 1x Kabalites, 2x Wyches, Lilith, 2 Beastpacks, 1 Court and some Mandrakes.

We played UKTC mission 1 Terraform and Sweeping Engagement.

Gameplan!!

Going first, I need to force the engagement, as with any game, going second gives end of game scoring potential, so going first I need to mitigate that as much as possible.

With any elf army, they don't like pressure and love nothing more than to trade high OC units for Wardogs, this cannot happen more than a couple times.

Havoks will be great to reducing Drukhari units in size and finishing off the 1 or 2 model units that are hiding.

So a fairly simple plan, pressure, kill the chaff/trading units and go after anything else that presents a threat during the game, Scourges and Ravager namely.

Practice game 1

Early game:
Well, the game went to plan, with going first I scouted up Stalkers, putting them in range of all 3 midfield objectives, staging everything else behind ruins bar a Executioner that can move up and get LoS to a Mandrake squad.

The response was to kill 2 Stalkers with Beast Packs and some shooting from Kabalites in Raider and a Ravager. (Scourge in deepstrike).

Mid game:
I continued to apply maximum pressure, reserve Brigands walk on and I counter the beastpacks, picking up both, killing the Ravager and continuing to chip away the Wyches and various units that contested objectives

Drukhari continue to counter, Scourges drop in, I overwatch and get 5 6s with a Brigands shooting but roll 5 1s to wound, they kill the Brigand, which then shoots on death and kills the Scourge, 2nd Scourge units picks up a Wardog.

At this point, im able to take another Brigand off my secure expansion flank and bring it into range of the Scourge, with obvious consequences for the Drukhari.

Late game:

Mopping up time, with limited anti tank resources the court continues to be a pain, but I chop away and score what pts I can

In the end, the Drukhari go for a hail Mary to deny and tag what they can, but ultimately ran out of assets to make it an effective play, but they didnt have much other choice, because Havoks are amazing into this match up.

Result: 72:54 win.

Solid game, went to plan, list felt strong. Still early doors, kept forgetting sustained and army rules, plenty to learn in terms of positioning.

I would love some Daemon Allies.... but list submission for an RTT was just after this game, so I submitted this list.

Practice game2: Black Templars

We played UKTC mission Hidden Supplies Search and Destroy.

My list, as above we're now post RTT list submission, this is locked in!

Black Templars: Gladius
3x Castellan Marshal and Sword Brother combos
Emperors Champion with Assault Intercessor squad
Lieutenant (lone op, reactive move)
Intercessor squad
Infiltrators squad
Scout squad
Jump Pack Assault Intercessor Squad
2x Impulsors
2x Repulsor Executioners

Pregame plan:

This list looks and feels very nasty, its pretty refined in terms of competitive units.

Im worried by most of this list, any sword bro squad could kill 2+ Wardogs, Executioners could quite easily pick up a Wardog and then the scoring/trade style units are also not easy to trade 1 Wardog for... not an easy game in any sense.

Early game:
Going first, as explained above, going first, I need to force the pacing of the game.

Black Templars have left me a bit of an opening, one of the Repulsor Executioners has deployed aggressively the Preyslayer’s Mantle Karnivore is left with a very makeable charge of 5ish inches. Out dropping the BT made a big difference here.

My opponent reactive moves a Lieutenant to try and block the Preyslayers Karnivore charge, but im able to get 2 Stalkers into lone op range.

I push down my left flank and tuck into the ruin, I go after the lone opp and get fairly lucky hitting 3 out of 4 Deathspear melta shots and kill the Lieutenant blocking the Karnivore charge.

I hit the charge and bring the Repulsor down to 3 Wounds.

Into the black templars turn, they move out with Emperors Champion squad on my left flank and a Sword Bro squad to pick up Wardogs on central objectives, both do their jobs and deny primary as a result, but this leaves them exposed.

Karnivore fights on death and picks up the Executioner when it kills it in combat.

Mid game:

We continue to trade on objectives i ensure I keep away from the Sword bros who can reactive into a Impulsor behind the central big L, the Emperors Champion squad is quite isolated so I feel more comfortable moving into reactive move range. The Sword bros are killed at range and the Emperors Champion squad is killed off by shooting and the champ is finished in combat.

Those Wardogs are traded for more Templar shooting and combat the following turn. Primary denied again.

Late game:

As we move into the late game, its pretty clear that the Wardogs can now out trade the BT army and we wrap the game up fairly quickly.

BT move out and the remaining Sword bro squad pick up yet another Wardog, the remaining Executioner kills another, but, its not enough.

Wardogs then move up and charge where possible, killing the Executioner and remaining Sword Bro, this denies a bit bottom turn score for the BT army.

Result: Win 64-43 to Houndpack Lance

That's 2 games played with my RTT list.

Im very happy with how things have gone, two very different styles of armies!

RTT post should be up next week!
