The War Dog Huntsman is the most reliable anti-tank War Dog available in the Houndpack Lance Detachment, and today, I’m here to give you the full lowdown on why this daemon engine deserves a spot in your next Chaos Knights Houndpack Lance list.
Overview
Like all War Dogs, the Huntsman is fast, tough, and deadly up close.
You’re looking at a Movement of 12”, Toughness 9, 14 Wounds, a 3+ Armour Save, and a 5+ Invulnerable Save (against shooting only).
That combination makes it one of the most durable and mobile mid-sized threats in the game, capable of pushing up the board early and putting pressure on your opponent’s key assets.
Loadout and Weapons
The Huntsman comes with a fairly fixed loadout, but it’s one that perfectly suits its role as a tank hunter.
Daemonbreath Spear – This is your primary ranged weapon. With solid strength, AP, and damage, it’s ideal for punching through tough armour or finishing off wounded vehicles. The short-to-mid range means you’ll need to close the distance, but that’s exactly where the Huntsman thrives.
Reaper Chaintalon – When it’s time to get up close and personal, the Chaintalon does the heavy lifting. You can switch between sweeping and striking profiles, making it versatile enough to handle both hordes of infantry with its 8 strength 8 ap2 attacks and and heavy targets with its strike 4 str10 ap3 flat3 damage attacks.
Stubber or Meltagun – You have a choice here:
The Stubber offers a bit of chip damage and is decent for clearing chaff or finishing off low-wound models.
The Meltagun, on the other hand, doubles down on the Huntsman’s anti-armour role, giving you another high-strength, high-damage shot for cracking tanks or monsters at close range.
Both options have merit, but if you’re leaning into the anti-tank theme, the Meltagun is the clear thematic and tactical choice.
Special Ability – Relentless Hunter
The Huntsman’s defining trait is its ability that grants re-rolls to wound against Vehicles and Monsters, both in shooting and in melee.
This is huge.
Re-rolling wounds dramatically increases your consistency against big targets, ensuring that your high-damage attacks actually land where they count. Against something like a Impulsor or a Carnifex, this reliability can easily swing an engagement in your favour.
This ability also synergises beautifully with the Houndpack’s aggressive playstyle. You’re encouraged to move in, pick a target, and tear it apart — and the Huntsman does that better than any other War Dog variant when facing vehicles and monsters.
Battlefield Role and Tactics
The Huntsman works best as a mid-range brawler and target eliminator. Here are a few tactical notes to make the most of it:
Flank aggressively. With 12” movement, the Huntsman can easily outmaneuver heavier targets.
Pair it with ranged support. War Dogs Executioners autocannons or Brigands Daemonbreath Spears and Aveneger Chaincannons can soften targets before the Huntsman moves in for the kill, with reliable efficiency.
Choose engagements wisely. Don’t throw it into large infantry blobs — its real value lies in hunting high-value targets like tanks, dreadnoughts, or monstrous creatures. Even with a sweep profile, other War Dogs excel in these scenarios.
Use terrain. With a 5+ invulnerable save that only applies to shooting, keeping the Huntsman in cover or out of line of sight before it commits can preserve its wounds for when it matters most. T9 14 wounds isnt as durable if you commit where War Dogs can be focused down.
Final Thoughts
The War Dog Huntsman stands out as a dependable, flexible, and brutal choice in the Houndpack Lance Detachment. It offers a great balance of mobility, resilience, and raw killing power, making it a cornerstone of any Chaos Knights force that wants to dominate the vehicle game.
If you need something that can chase down tanks, shred monsters, and look good doing it — the Huntsman has your back.
