Custodes League Prep - Testing Reconnaissance Force Disposition

I've signed up to the local competitive league and list submission is almost upon me!

I've been incredibly busy recently, so no practice games and I haven't had much time to properly break down my RTT from a couple of weeks ago outside of writing my tournament report, which you can read here.

One thing I did take away from the event, however, is that I've gone quite cold on the Purge the Foe Force Disposition. On top of that, I've also signed up for a teams event in August, where my Force Disposition options will be more limited. With that in mind, I've decided it's time to start testing Recon.

The plan is to focus on Recon, Shield Host, and Silent Hunters over the coming weeks. I'm still not completely sold on my list, but I've submitted the following for the league so I can give it a proper test.

League List

  • Centura (Unattached)
  • 3 Vertus Praetors (Bolters)
  • 3 Vertus Praetors (Bolters)

  • 4 Witchseekers
  • Rhino

Breaking Down the List

The list is built around two hard-hitting Custodes units, backed up by six smaller trading units and a solid Sisters of Silence contingent.

The idea is for the larger units to Rapid Ingress, apply pressure where it's needed, and 0mwlcremove the opponent's key threats. One unit of Vertus Praetors will also start in reserve, giving me another fast threat that can arrive in the mid-game and exploit any openings.

At the same time, I want to leave enough on the table to stop my opponent simply rushing me before my reserves arrive.

The list has been designed specifically with the Recon missions in mind. That said, I haven't had any practice games with it yet, so at this stage it's very much a theorycrafting exercise.

How I See Recon Playing Out

Recon Mirror

The goal here is simple: aim to score the full 45 Primary points. The key will be controlling the expansion objectives while winning the fight for the centre.

Take and Hold

Stand in three or four table quarters, remove enemy units, and maintain control of objectives. On paper, this feels like one of the more straightforward missions.

Priority Assets

Control the centre, eliminate enemy units standing on objectives, dominate the expansion objectives, and keep the opponent out of my half of the table.

Purge the Foe

Hold objectives, complete actions where required, and make sure I'm controlling objectives at the end of the game.

Disruption

Control one objective, control more than my opponent, complete the action against enemy units, and remove their operation markers whenever possible.

Final Thoughts

I've built this list around what I believe Recon is asking armies to do. Whether that translates into success remains to be seen, but that's exactly what this league is for.

The biggest learning won't just be how my list performs it'll be understanding how other armies approach these missions and how the different Force Dispositions stack up against Recon.

The league kicks off next week, so stay tuned for Round 1 and, hopefully, plenty of lessons along the way.
